Why you're not getting better results from your website

Why you're not getting better results from your website

Changing your mindset when you're reviewing your site is the most important step you can take to begin improving it.

There are 3 things you should know about your website visitors:

  1. They're selfish.
  2. They're in a hurry.
  3. They don't want to have to think.

And if you're honest with yourself, you're exactly the same way when visiting websites.

You have way too much going on in your life to have to deal with confusing sites. All you want is to find what you're looking for, whether that's critical information for your business or a funny cat video to make you laugh and feel better after a bad day, you want it and you want it now.

There are probably thousands of places you can find content that will fit your criteria so why should you spend more than a couple of seconds looking for it on a particular site? It's much easier to hit the Back button and go to another site.

If you just have a hobby site with funny cat videos it's not a big deal when someone leaves your site. If you're a business owner, though, it's critical that you keep visitors on your site as long as possible. The longer you can keep them on there the more likely they'll convert in some way - contact you, join your mailing list, download a file, buy a product.

It's so frustrating, though. You've spent time and money creating your website but just aren't getting the results you expected. No matter what you do, results are flat.

There are many reasons your site might not be producing, but one of the most common is that site owners have a terrible habit of talking about themselves instead of about their site visitors. They're selling instead of serving.

If there's one thing you should keep in mind when writing content or reviewing your site for changes, it's that your website visitors could care less about you. They only care about themselves and how you can help them.

Make it your New Year's resolution to review your site and try to look at it as an outsider would. Imagine you're your perfect customer. What might you be looking for? What helpful content do you need? What could the site offer you that might help you decide this is a business you want to work with?

This can be really hard when looking at your own site, though. Trust me, I know. It's easy for me to review client sites and come up with ideas but hard to do it with our own. Why? Because I'm too familiar with it so I make assumptions because I already know what's there. That's why we get input from other pros who aren't part of our company.

If you know your site needs improving but you don't know where to start or you're having a hard time being objective, an easy way to get started is with our Website Audit (also known as a Teardown). I and my VP of Creative Services (Erin) will review your site together during a confidential Skype conference with you. We'll also provide you with video of the conference along with our notes so you can review it at your convenience.

You'll come away with actionable steps to make changes to your website that can make a real difference in performance.

By following up on the advice, you'll be one step closer to reaching your business goals. Imagine the relief you'll feel at knowing you're moving forward!

The audit results are yours to do with as you please. You can make the changes yourself, have your internal team make them, hire a freelancer or another firm, or have us make them.

You can find more information about our Website Audits here.

It's a no-risk, no-brainer.

We have a money-back guarantee, and the audit fee is actually an investment because it can be applied to any project work you have us do within 30 days.

Whether you do it yourself, get us to do it, or have someone else do it, a complete review of your site is one of the most important things you can do to jumpstart the New Year.
